Homestay

We place international students with a host family, which allows them to fully experience our Kiwi lifestyle within a caring and supportive environment. An essential part of an International Student’s stay in New Zealand is their homestay experience. Glenfield College will ensure a student’s stay is comfortable, happy and positive. Our Homestay Liaison takes excellent care in selecting an appropriate New Zealand family and visits regularly to ensure they continue to meet the high standards required.

Glenfield College homestay families know how to deal with students new to New Zealand and understand the problems they might need help overcoming, such as homesickness, language difficulties and learning to live in a different culture. We thoroughly assess all homestay families before placing a student with them, and parents can feel confident that their children will be safe and well looked after during their stay in New Zealand.

Students can be met at the airport and transported to their homestay. There is an orientation programme in their first days at Glenfield College, which includes information about New Zealand culture and the school’s systems. Throughout their stay in New Zealand, students are fully supported by the International Student Team, their classroom teachers, Deans and Counsellor.

Applying to be a Host Family

Being a host family plays a vital role in helping our International Students to feel at home during their stay and to make the most of their time in New Zealand. Hosting an International Student is a great way to learn about another culture. If you have children at Glenfield College or other schools, they too can benefit greatly from this experience. For many families, this experience is very rewarding and can begin friendships that will last a lifetime.

We would love to hear from families willing to open up their homes to our International Students. Our host families have included single parents, families, couples and retirees. We welcome applications from anyone in the local area who speaks English in the home and has a clean, tidy home and a spare furnished bedroom. It is essential that you have a genuine desire to share our culture and beautiful surroundings with an International Student.

Before accepting you as a host family our Homestay Liaison will organise a police vet of anyone 18 years or older who lives in the house and will visit the house to do an inspection. We must also visit the house during the year to ensure that it is still a suitable place for a student.

Our Homestay Liaison will enable communication to be made between the International Student and host family prior to arrival so that they can start to get to know each other, and the connection to Glenfield College can begin.

Host families will receive a weekly payment based on current market rates per week for each International Student they host.
