Glenfield College Selection Process
It is our aim here at Glenfield College to put together our strongest team for each sport that we send to either a Regional, North Island or National event. This is based on the following parameters: ability, experience, fitness, commitment, attitude, dedication and sportsmanship. In the case where there are multiple teams within a sport, it is important that each student who trials is accurately placed in the team that is at their ability level to ensure they are competitive and have a chance to be successful within their grade and have fun.
Coach Selection
It is our objective to appoint a coach for all sports teams. This process, when possible, will be completed well in advance of the upcoming season for each sport to ensure planning time for each coach.
Police Vetting
Under the Vulnerable Children’s Act it is imperative that before anybody becomes involved in sport at Glenfield College, they are cleared by the New Zealand Police Vetting Service. This ensures their own safety, as well as the safety of our athletes.
Team Selection and Trials
This process may differ between codes. The Sports Office will provide adequate notice (at least a week) of trial dates and times, making sure students know when and where to be for trials as well as what they will need to bring. This will be done via school notices, website updates and email.
Trial Procedures
Students will register interest prior to their first trial. Where possible, all trials will take place at Glenfield with the exception being a combined schools team. Teams will be posted on the Sports Office notice board as well as trialists being notified via email and/or other platforms. It is expected that when a student is named in a team that they are committed to that team and will make all training and games unless communicated with team coaches prior. If a second trial is needed, students will be notified of this at the conclusion of first trials.
Selection Criteria
Students will be selected for a team based on the following criteria;
- Commitment and attitude
- Work ethic and effort
- Skill level and game understanding
- Fitness and availability
- Team balance and positional needs
These criteria will be looked at by the coach, and we will endeavour to have more than one selector to reduce bias. We encourage players not selected to ask for feedback and to compete in the available team to continue developing skills for future selection.
Appeals and Concerns
If a player or parent/caregiver has concerns about selections, we encourage the following:
- Wait 24hr before contacting staff to allow for reflection and calm discussion.
- Contact the coach or Director of Sport in a respectful manner to arrange conversation.
- Note that discussions will focus on player development and future opportunities.
Player Withdrawal
If for unforeseen circumstances a player must withdrawal from a team, they must let the Sports Office know immediately. Students deciding that they no longer wish to play in a team takes a large amount of resources to notify the individual code, finance department and to make changes to teams. Please do so only if absolutely vital, and take consideration of the impact that this has on other players/coaches/managers/the code and staff. Withdrawal after registrations close for each individual code may incur a levy. There will be no refunds after cut-off date other than in the case of injury. Each code’s cut-off date will vary.
