The sea kayaking course will prepare students for their assessment during a 2 or 3-day trip. The training will take place at Lake Pupuke and Takapuna Beach on Monday after school for 8 weeks in double sea kayaks. The overnight trip will be planned together with the students and a decision on where to go will depend on their skill level and the weather conditions. This unit standard is combined with camping, which gives students the opportunity to gain 9 credits when they sign up for Tramping and Camping at once. Camping will be assessed over 2 separate camps. Teamwork, safety and risk management, rescue skills and kayak skills will be assessed.

485: Demonstrate rafting skills on sheltered or slow-moving water
This course is worth 3 credits.
The students will be trained in rafting skills on Lake Pupuke, preparing them for the Social Raft competition on the Tarawera River. Students are assessed on the lake and the race with a focus on teamwork, perseverance, safety and risk management and rafting skills.
Costs: $TBC incl. overnight fees, transport, instruction, raft, paddle, PFD and helmet hire.
Excl: Food and equipment needed; shoes, sleeping bag, thermal clothing.

This course will prepare the students for an overnight cycle tour, and assess them when mountain biking on intermediate terrain. The mountain biking will take place at Woodhill forest, Wednesday after school for a 6-week course. The assessment will take place during the overnight cycle tour. The tour dates and final trip plan will be decided with the group and will depend on their skills and the weather conditions. To prepare for the overnight trip the students are going on a maintenance course before the trip and will be assessed on their skills for 3 credits.
Costs: $TBC incl. park entry + MTB hire for 6 weeks.

This course is worth 3 credits.
Rock Climbing is an exciting and challenging sport where teamwork and safety are essential. The indoor rock climbing assessment will take place in term 3 at the Birkenhead Leisure Centre. This 6-week course will prepare the students for their assessment and they will be assessed on their belaying, safety awareness, rope techniques and abseiling.
Costs: $TBC incl. entry, instruction, harness and shoe hire.
TBD: Tramping and Camping
425: Experience day tramps: 3 credits
426: Experience camping: 3 credits
This unit standard will be assessed over a 2-day tramping camp. Preparation will take place after school on the North Shore, and will result in a day tramp in the Waitekere Ranges. The trip will be planned and prepared with the students, and decisions on where and when it will take place will be based on their skills and the prevailing weather conditions. The camping credits will only be awarded when students have been on 2 overnight trips, which can be done during the Sea Kayaking trip.
