Our top students in Years 9 and 10 are placed in classes with others of similar ability, based upon the information provided to us by contributing schools. Should student numbers be sufficient this can lead to one or two top classes. Students within these classes flourish by being fortified, challenged and driven to achieve at levels beyond their national cohort.
Gifted and talented students in Years 11 and 13 are mentored by the Principal who set individual goals and challenges, evaluating the student’s progress multiple times a year and addressing further educational needs. There are also students taking subjects at a level or two above their cohort because they are capable of doing so. Our philosophy in this matter is that where exceptional talent and need is obvious, then we will challenge and develop it further.
Glenfield College is quite prepared to be as flexible as possible to meet individual needs where differing talents exist. We have had exceptionally talented dancers for whom we issued individualized timetables, enabling them to spend more time on Dance with the aim of gaining entry to highly sought after tertiary Dance courses. One graduate from 2009 entered in the NZ School of Dance in Wellington, while in 2010 an outstanding soccer player needed individualized support to address his time off school so that he could pursue his professional commitments. We also liaise with coaches and family to ensure success both in school and in their sporting arena. The Gryphons Club and Rugby Development Programme are also aimed at meeting the needs of our talented young sports people (see Sports.)
