Glenfield College Student Performs in Hit Musical
Glenfield College’s own Samyson Robinson was bitten by the acting bug at a young age. One of his latest acting escapades involved him being part of the ensemble on the smash hit stage musical Mamma Mia! The production ran at Auckland’s civic theatre for a limited time 3 week season over the course of which actors preformed a whopping 23 shows not to mention endeavouring countless hours of rehearsals. Samyson being the youngest member of the cast was tasked with balancing his school life and his stage career. Good thing this came as nothing new to him. He’s been taking to the stage for close to 10 or 11 years now.
He told us how everything started:
“To be honest it was kind of like a spur of the moment thing. I really liked Dr. Seuss and one of my mom’s bosses sons were doing a production about Dr. Seuss and they were like go along and do it.”
How did you get into Mamma Mia?
“I decided I’d audition for a laugh; but then I got through the dance audition and then did a singing audition. I got through that as well and then they made me read a script. After that they called me at school and were like we’d like to offer you a position in Mamma Mia!”
It must have been great working in such a large scale production?
“It was awesome. We all became such a family. Everyone was really supportive of each other and everyone was so talented. You just learnt something new every single rehearsal.”
So where do you see yourself in the next 15 years?
“Hopefully successful. There’s a few shows that people are talking about doing that I’d really like to be in, so I’ll just keep auditioning and get my name out there and see where it takes me.”
