As a core subject in the junior school, Social Studies offers students an essential part of their identity – a core set of principals by which to stand. By examining our own and other people’s societies, our developing young citizens move closer to an understanding of how they are affected by the rules, laws, values and attitudes of the people around them. More significantly, by learning the vital skills of inquiry and research, evaluating and taking social action, they learn how they can shape our developing society and its cultures. Knowing who we are gives us strength and knowing how to make a difference empowers us to do so.
• Asking questions, gathering information and background ideas, and examining relevant current issues.
• Exploring and analysing people’s values and perspectives.
• Considering the ways in which people make decisions and participate in social action.
• Reflecting on and evaluating the understandings they have developed and the responses that may be required.
We want every student to grow and develop while acquiring the skills needed to be successful in understanding aspects of behaviour that will assist in operating in a competitive and yet cooperative world.
