English Language programmes, where English is a student’s second language, play an important part in helping students to “develop and clarify their attitudes, values and beliefs while respecting the values of others” (NZ Curriculum Framework).
The English Language Department ensures that each student has their individual learning needs met at every opportunity, and provides a programme covering the following critical areas:
• Building up the student’s command of English by equipping them with the four essential skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening.
• Building student confidence by providing a culturally sensitive, safe and supportive learning environment where everyone can achieve success.
• Using teaching strategies which foster student participation and enjoyment of learning.
